Why track bike maintenance by distance?
Most wear parts on a bike wear out in proportion to how far you ride them. A chain stretches as it wears, and a worn chain then wears the cassette and chainrings with it, which turns a cheap replacement into an expensive one. Tyres lose tread and get more prone to punctures. Brake pads wear down until they stop well, or not at all.
The hard part isn't the maintenance, it's remembering how far each part has done. Keeping that count by hand rarely survives a busy month of riding. An app that already records your rides can keep it for you.
How maintenance tracking works in Live Ride
- Add your bikes. If a bike already has distance on it, enter its starting distance so the count is right from day one.
- Choose the bike before you ride. Every ride you record counts towards that bike and its parts.
- Get told when something's due. A part shows as due soon at 90% of its interval and as due when it reaches it. You find out after the ride.
- Mark it serviced. One swipe resets the part's count after you replace or service it.
Each new bike starts with a chain, tyres, brake pads and a full service. You can also track a cassette or any other part, and add as many bikes as you own. Because the counts come from your recorded rides, deleting a ride or moving it to another bike updates every count automatically.
Starting intervals for common parts
Live Ride starts each part on a common rule-of-thumb interval, and you can change any of them to suit your bike and riding:
| Part | Starting interval |
|---|---|
| Chain | 3,000 km |
| Brake pads | 2,000 km |
| Tyres | 5,000 km |
| Full service | 5,000 km |
| Cassette | 10,000 km |
| Other parts | 1,000 km |
These are starting points, not promises. Wet and gritty roads, mountain biking and heavier riders wear parts faster, and well-kept drivetrains last longer. When a chain comes up as due, check it with a chain wear checker before replacing it, then set the interval to match what you see.
